U.S. Solar Power Set for 75% Growth by 2025, Surpassing Coal and Nuclear

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) anticipates a substantial 75% growth in solar power generation from 163 billion kWh in 2023 to 286 billion kWh in 2025, according to its Short-Term Energy Outlook report.

In the first ten months of 2023, solar power contributed 5.78% to U.S. electricity, marking a 16% increase from the previous year. Wind power is expected to grow by 11%, reaching 476 billion kWh in 2025. Coal generation is forecasted to decline, while natural gas remains the largest source of U.S. electricity. The electric power sector, with a total production of 4,017 billion kWh, saw renewable sources accounting for 22%, surpassing coal in 2022.
The addition of 38% more solar capacity is projected, reaching 131 GW by the end of 2024, with a forecasted total solar capacity of 65 GW in 2025, solidifying the shift in the U.S. energy landscape.
