JA Solar Breaks World Record with 28.2% Efficient Silicon Solar Cell

The race for next-generation solar efficiency has reached a new milestone. Chinese photovoltaic manufacturer JA Solar, in partnership with PV equipment supplier Gold Stone Energy, has announced a record-breaking 28.2% conversion efficiency for their jointly developed hybrid back-contact (HBC) solar cell.
Certified by Germany’s testing authority TÜV Rheinland, the result officially marks the highest efficiency ever recorded for a single-junction silicon solar cell. The achievement pushes past the previous industry benchmark of 28.13%, which was set by rival manufacturer Longi using a hybrid interdigitated back-contact (HIBC) design.
Understanding the Technology Behind the Breakthrough
The core innovation lies in the hybrid back-contact (HBC) architecture. Traditional solar cells rely on metal gridlines on the front surface to collect electricity, but these lines inevitably block a portion of incoming sunlight, creating optical shading losses.
HBC technology solves this issue by moving all electrical contacts to the rear side of the cell. Leaving the front surface completely clear allows the cell to absorb more light, while the optimized rear-contact design enhances overall current collection. Furthermore, HBC integrates advanced surface passivation techniques borrowed from current high-efficiency crystalline silicon designs, maximizing energy conversion without sacrificing stability.
Beyond raw efficiency gains, the technology offers a major practical advantage for the industry: compatibility. HBC architectures are designed to serve as a direct upgrade path for existing Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact (TOPCon) manufacturing lines, allowing manufacturers to boost performance without completely rebuilding their factories.
Scaling Up Production via Joint Venture
This technological leap is already moving toward commercial production. Under a licensing agreement, Gold Stone Energy’s subsidiary, Golden Solar New Energy Technology, is licensing its proprietary HBC patent technology to a joint venture formed with Yiwu JA Solar (a subsidiary of JA Solar).
The partnership centers on a 4 GW upgrade and retrofit project. Rather than building new facilities from scratch, the joint venture will focus on retrofitting JA Solar's existing production assets to mass-produce the new HBC cells, significantly lowering capital expenditures and accelerating time-to-market.
The Intensifying Race for Back-Contact Dominance
JA Solar and Gold Stone Energy’s announcement is part of a broader, highly competitive trend among major Chinese PV manufacturers pushing the limits of back-contact technology.
Just recently, Trina Solar announced that its TOPCon-compatible hybrid back-contact (THBC) cell achieved a 28.0% efficiency rating, certified by Germany’s Institute for Solar Energy Research Hamelin (ISFH). Trina Solar achieved this using a large-area 210R cell format and is currently accelerating the industrialization of its THBC modules.
With TOPCon technology firmly established as the current industry standard, the world's leading solar manufacturers are turning to back-contact variants as the next frontier. The rapid succession of efficiency records highlights a fiercely competitive market, as companies race to commercialize architectures that deliver maximum module power density and better long-term returns on investment.
