UK Unveils Ambitious Solar Roadmap with 47 GW Target by 2030

The British government has released its comprehensive Solar Roadmap, outlining plans to expand the nation's solar capacity to between 45-47 gigawatts by 2030, with potential to reach approximately 57 GW. This strategic initiative aims to strengthen energy independence, reduce consumer costs, and address climate change concerns.

Working in concert with the government's Clean Power Action Plan, the roadmap is projected to utilize just 0.4% of Britain's land while supporting up to 35,000 jobs and generating enough power for roughly nine million households.

Ed Miliband MP, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, emphasized the government's commitment, stating: "We will drive forward a solar rooftop revolution, while addressing challenges in planning, grid infrastructure, supply chains, and workforce development."

 UK has surpassed 18 GW of installed solar capacity

The roadmap details over 70 specific actions organized into six key areas: Rooftop Solar, Electricity Networks, Supply Chain and Innovations, Skills Development, Planning and Support Schemes, and Collaborative Partnerships.

Among the critical initiatives are plans to simplify grid connection procedures for solar projects and develop a resilient, diverse solar supply chain. The roadmap also proposes mandatory community benefit funds from developers to ensure local communities share in the advantages of new energy infrastructure.

A significant focus is placed on rooftop installations across residential, commercial, and public sectors. Specific measures include increasing solar deployment on new construction; promoting portable plug-in solar panels suitable for balconies and rooftops in rental properties; and encouraging installations on warehouses, homes, parking facilities, schools, and hospitals.

The government estimates that families could reduce annual energy expenses by approximately £500 through rooftop solar installation as part of its "rooftop revolution," supported by the Homes Standard and Warm Homes programs.

Currently, the UK has surpassed 18 GW of installed solar capacity, with more than 1.5 million homes featuring solar systems.

The roadmap represents the culmination of work by the Solar Taskforce, launched in 2023, which will transition into a new Solar Council responsible for implementing the UK Solar Roadmap.

The initiative has garnered support from numerous energy companies and organizations, including Lightsource bp, whose EMEA general counsel Alex Desouza remarked: "The solar roadmap publication comes at a crucial moment for UK energy. Solar is essential to Britain's future energy mix and plays a vital role in delivering secure, affordable power. Expanding solar and battery storage helps maintain competitive energy costs for UK businesses, stimulating economic growth and enhancing corporate resilience."

Abigail Ward, policy manager at the Energy Saving Trust, added: "With solar being central to achieving Clean Power by 2030 and reducing Britain's fossil fuel dependence, today's roadmap provides a welcome outline of the government's approach to large-scale solar deployment."

Trevor Hutchings, CEO at the Renewable Energy Association (REA), noted that the government's Solar Roadmap "represents a welcome and timely intervention recognizing rooftop solar's crucial role in reducing bills, creating employment, and enhancing UK energy security. Solar technology is popular, cost-effective, and rapidly deployable—this roadmap establishes a credible pathway uniting policy, financing, and industry to accelerate installation across the built environment."
