Global Solar Market Hits New Records as 35 Countries Pass GW-Scale Installations

he global solar industry delivered another historic year in 2024, with record-breaking additions in PV installations, module production, and manufacturing capacity, according to the
Worldwide, 553 GW to 601 GW of new solar capacity was added in 2024, pushing global cumulative installations beyond 2,260 GW.
Utility-scale projects continued to dominate, representing around 62% of new additions. Centralized systems above a few MW accounted for 373 GW, while the distributed segment contributed 228 GW, maintaining the global split seen in 2023.
🌏 China Leads the Charge
China alone installed between 309 GW and 357 GW, nearly 60% of global volume, echoing Germany’s dominance in the late 2000s. Following China, the top markets were:
United States – 47 GW
India – 32 GW
Germany – 17.2 GW
The report highlights that nearly 35 countries now operate GW-scale annual markets, and over 40 countries exceed 4 GW in cumulative capacity — marking a major global acceleration in solar adoption.
⚙️ Global Production & Overcapacity
Solar module production hit 728 GW in 2024, up 18.5% year-on-year — a significant slowdown compared to the explosive 61.7% growth between 2022 and 2023.
China continued to dominate with 86.4% of global PV module output. Other production markets included:
India – 24 GW
USA – 23 GW
Vietnam – 20 GW
Thailand – ~10 GW
Malaysia – ~7 GW
IEA-PVPS notes the surge of bifacial modules, with China reporting that 77.6% of its crystalline silicon modules were bifacial to meet demand for higher yield technologies.
🏠Massive Manufacturing Capacity
Total module manufacturing capacity reached 1,405 GW annually, with China holding 83%. Similar trends were seen in upstream components:
Wafer production: 804 GW (97% China)
Wafer capacity: 1,395 GW
Cell production: 753 GW
Cell capacity: 1,427 GW
2024 also marked a major technological shift:
PERC cell share collapsed from 64% → ~20%
TOPCon technology surged from 30% → ~70%
HJT & back-contact remained below 5%
Emerging tech such as perovskite and tandem cells is progressing, but large-scale commercial rollout is still pending.
đź’Ľ Industry Pressures & Market Reality
Despite record installations, the industry faced critical oversupply and unsustainably low module prices, continuing from late 2023.
By mid-2025, major manufacturers began reassessing CAPEX plans, scaling down expansions, and shifting into energy storage & integrated solutions to stabilise financial performance.
📌 Bottom Line
2024 reinforced solar power’s position as the fastest-growing energy sector on the planet — but the industry is entering a new phase where scale, pricing pressure, storage integration, and technology transitions will determine who stays competitive.
