Charge by Day, Shine by Night: How Hybrid Solar Systems Are Powering a Smarter Sri Lanka
A New Era of Solar Savings in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s solar revolution just entered its next phase. The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has introduced the Night Peak Export Tariff, giving existing rooftop solar customers the chance to earn Rs. 45.80 per kWh by exporting electricity back to the grid between 6:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.

For the first time, homeowners with hybrid solar systems — equipped with battery storage — can sell their stored energy at peak-hour rates, when national demand is highest and grid electricity is most valuable.

How It Works

During the day, your solar panels generate energy as usual. Instead of sending all of it directly to the grid, your battery system stores the excess power. Then, when night falls and the grid needs it most, your inverter automatically exports this stored energy back to the CEB grid — earning you the premium Rs. 45.80 per kWh rate.

It’s the perfect balance:

  • ☀️ Charge by Day – store free solar energy

  • 🌙 Shine by Night – sell it when it’s worth the most

Why This Matters

This program transforms how Sri Lankans think about solar. It’s not just about saving on bills anymore — it’s about creating a second income stream while supporting national energy stability.

Benefits include: ✅ Higher returns for solar investors ✅ Reduced dependency on fossil fuels ✅ Stabilized grid performance during high-demand hours ✅ Faster payback for hybrid system owners

The Technology Behind It

To qualify, homeowners need a Hybrid Solar System — typically made up of:

  • A Solis Hybrid Inverter ⚙️

  • A Dyness Lithium Battery Pack 🔋

  • High-efficiency Phono Solar or JA Solar panels ☀️

These components work together to store excess daytime power and intelligently release it when night-time tariffs apply.

A Step Toward a Sustainable Future

The initiative supports Sri Lanka’s long-term renewable energy goals while helping consumers maximize financial returns. By encouraging energy storage, it also reduces strain on the national grid and lowers the need for fossil-fuel generation during peak hours.
