A major U.S. power company has unveiled an innovative AI-powered robot called "Maximo" designed to transform solar panel installation. This groundbreaking technology promises to reduce installation time and costs by half compared to traditional manual methods.
Game-Changing Technology
"Maximo represents a significant breakthrough as the first market-validated solar installation robot," according to the company's president and CEO. He emphasized that such innovations are crucial for meeting rapidly growing energy demands, particularly from AI and data centers, by enabling faster and more efficient project completion.
The robot enhances installation efficiency by automating the heavy lifting, placement, and attachment of solar panels, which simultaneously improves workplace safety and installation precision.
Proven Results and Future Applications
The company has already successfully deployed Maximo to install nearly 10 megawatts of solar capacity. Looking ahead, they plan to utilize the robot in building up to 5 gigawatts of solar projects over the next three years.
One upcoming deployment will be at a 2 GW solar project in Kern County, California—a major solar-plus-storage initiative with a large tech company as the power purchaser.
A director of sustainability at the tech company noted: "With society's growing energy requirements, we need more solar and wind projects, making innovation essential for faster scaling. We're pleased to work with forward-thinking renewable energy developers who are leveraging AI technologies to accelerate our transition to carbon-free energy."
Advanced Capabilities
Maximo employs computer vision technology to achieve precise panel placement and features machine learning capabilities that continuously improve its performance and efficiency. The robot has demonstrated reliable operation across diverse climate conditions and lighting environments, with successful field testing at various U.S. project sites.
Addressing Industry Challenges
The automation of physically demanding and precision-oriented tasks comes at a critical time for the solar industry, which faces significant workforce shortages. According to the Interstate Renewable Energy Council, U.S. solar installations are projected to grow from 141 GW in 2022 to over 700 GW by 2033. The Solar Energy Industries Association forecasts that solar jobs could reach 538,000 by 2032. Notably, in 2022, 44% of solar employers reported extreme difficulty finding qualified candidates—the highest percentage ever recorded in the Solar Jobs Census.
Maximo joins other emerging automation solutions in the sector, including another system which combines digital twins, logistics software, an on-site command center, automated assembly lines, and installation rovers capable of 24/7 operation. In its initial deployment, this other system achieved a 25% improvement in labor productivity compared to manual installation methods.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has trimmed its forecast for renewable energy growth between 2025 and 2030 by around 5%, attributing the adjustment mainly to lower-than-expected solar capacity additions.
