World’s Largest Solar Plant Now Operational in China

China Green Development Group has activated the 3.5 GW Midong solar project in Urumqi, located in the Xinjiang region of China. This ambitious project required an investment of CNY 15.45 billion ($2.13 billion).

China Green Electricity Investment of Tianjin, a subsidiary of China Green Development Group (CGDG), has brought the 3.5 GW Midong photovoltaic (PV) farm in Urumqi, Xinjiang, online. This facility now holds the title of the world's largest solar plant. It surpasses the previous record held by the 2.2 GW solar park operated by Chinese state-owned utility Huanghe Hydropower Development since October 2020.

The construction of the Midong project was executed by China Construction Eighth Engineering Division Corp and Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) in multiple phases. This extensive project, costing CNY 15.45 billion, includes over 5.26 million 650 W monocrystalline bifacial double-glass PV panels from an undisclosed manufacturer.

The project’s infrastructure encompasses 1.23 million supporting piles, five 220 kV booster stations, and more than 208 kilometers of transmission lines that connect the array to the grid through a 750 kV substation.

Founded in December 2020, China Green Development Group (CGDG) is a significant energy investment organization under the central Chinese government, succeeding the former State Grid-owned Luneng Group. Managed by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC), CGDG specializes in the investment, construction, and management of renewable energy projects. The group is on track to achieve over 20 GW of renewable energy installations by the end of 2024.

CGDG operates as a state-owned enterprise with diversified equity, possessing a registered capital of RMB 40 billion. The company aims to lead in green industry investment, focusing on strategic emerging industries, green energy, low-carbon cities, and green services. CGDG's green energy operations span 12 resource-rich provinces in China, encompassing 43 power plants, including land and offshore wind power, photovoltaic power generation, solar thermal power generation, and energy storage. This results in an operational installed capacity of 4 million kW and an annual power generation capacity exceeding 7 billion kWh.

Notable projects completed by CGDG include the 700,000 kW multi-energy complementary national demonstration project in Qinghai and the 200,000 kW offshore wind power project in Jiangsu, both of which have garnered national recognition. CGDG has also embarked on major initiatives like the national flexible direct current (DC) transmission demonstration project in Guangdong and the 1,000,000 kW offshore wind power project in Shantou, emphasizing innovation in clean energy technology and promoting efficient energy use.

With nearly 30 years of experience in urban development, CGDG is a key player in creating low-carbon cities across 25 cities in regions like Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, the Yangtze River Delta, and Hainan. The company's efforts in modern service industries, including high-end hotels and eco-tourism resorts, aim to enhance the quality of life for residents and promote sustainable urbanization. CGDG has also developed landmark projects like Jinan Luneng Elite City and Chongqing Luneng Star City, contributing significantly to local economies and residents' well-being.

Through its initiatives, CGDG adheres to the principles of ecological sustainability and cultural integration, operating 31 hotels, 9 large shopping malls, and numerous community properties. The company's rural revitalization projects, such as the Agriculture-photovoltaic Complementary Project in Shaanxi, support modern agricultural practices and rural development.

Guided by the vision of sustainable development, CGDG integrates state-of-the-art green building standards and has achieved significant national certifications for its projects. The company is committed to fostering economic and social benefits, creating over 115,000 jobs, and paying more than RMB 70 billion in taxes. Through strategic partnerships with international brands and adherence to the "Carbon Neutrality Goal" and "Peaking Of CO2 Emissions" strategies, CGDG aims to lead the green transformation of industries, contributing to China's vision of a sustainable and prosperous future.
